I heard a rumour over a week ago that Clint Dempsey was wanted by Seattle Sounders in the US MLS League.
Those rumours seem to be gathering some pace as he is being seen in the US. They have recently played a game so you expect to see him. Spurs have returned to training but I don't know if Dempsey is due back next week or if he really is looking at a move back to the States.
It is certainly true that they have a Designated Player slot available. A designated player is a player who can earn more than the salary cap, each team is allowed three of these.
To grab some clarity a little research reveals an interview by Sigi Schmid their coach, where he was asked about the rumours.
"We're always interested in good players first off. But right now there's really nothing to it, there's nothing to say. But we're in a position, we announced that Shalrie Joseph is no longer a Designated Player, that was something that was necessary to put ourselves in a position to add a Designated Player to our team before August 8th."
Now that is being read as very ambiguous in the States so I guess it's wait and see and we'll know by the 8th.
He is a player that divides fans, those that only consider the eleven on the pitch and those who look at things from a squad point of view. I think everyone would agree though that given a squad worth he isn't a player you would desperately cling to so if the rumours were true it wouldn't matter to much.
It would seem strange when he could still play in the Premier League. so it's a I'll believe it when I see it move for me.
