With Dempsey gone and Gareth Bale looking like joining him when we agree a fee Spurs played Monaco and quite frankly embarrassed themselves.
The phrase headless chicken springs to mind, if Soldado was watching that he'd be thinking to himself what have I done. We were awful, a disjointed tam who looked like they didn't even know each other. We showed exactly why people call us a one man team because without that one man we have looked lacking in ideas in every game. Vast improvement is requires in what we are witnessing now or top 5 will be a struggle.
Fortunately it was a friendly so it doesn't matter but you at least expect to see a competent performance. We had better improve against Espanyol and play a side that looks more like the side we will plat in the league, if we have any fir centre-backs of course!
Hugo Lloris took a pillow out with him and was still fast asleep for the first goal. He didn't expect a shot, didn't move his feet, didn't get behind it and simply let it bounce over his hand into the 2 foot of space between him and the post. Shocking. Hope he enjoyed his holiday in Monaco where he met his family and friends, clearly he would rather have been with them than playing a game of football. Let a second struck at him into the net failing to palm or block the ball away. A forgettable performance.
Kyle Walker was the only member of the back four who should be playing in the first XI. He was over aggressive at time but continued his pre-season with another competent display. He has been one of the pluses of pre-season having come in for some stick last season by a section of supporters, often inventing errors he was not even making. It wasn't his best season last year but neither was it as bad as suggested. Promising so far.
Jake Livermore is simply not a centre-back so to critisize would be churlish. He stuck to his task well and did his best. In the heat it would have been a useful fitness exercise for him.
Zeki Fryers is a left-back who we haven't played there for some reason. Each time he plays we see him covering for injured centre-backs. Les Ferdinand confirmed what plenty of us knew but some blind individuals couldn't, that he will be a part of the first team squad this season. You don't buy a player, pay him £20K a week (more than some first team squad players) to be a development player. Having bent the rules to get him he is now showing he needs plenty of work on awareness. Rumours of his lack of development would appear to be true. Responsible for a goal against Man City in the air, he hardly jumped off the floor again allowing Falcao behind him to head into the net. He is tall but lacks authority in the air from what I have seen, the sooner he is moved to left-back the better.
Danny Rose responsible for at least 2 goals again. He is one of the easiest full-backs to beat, you simply play the ball inside him for a player to run onto and he is clueless. He either stands still or steps up. If he plays in the first team he will cost us any chance of Champions League football, he is nowhere near being a player capable of playing for a top four club. His positional play is awful and his defending weak. A liability whenever he plays. Clubs will target him and have huge success, Monaco did against him. How many goals came down his side and how many down Walkers? How many crosses did he stop?
Aaron Lennon had one of his games where if he ran he simply got pulled down and did little in the game. Created very little and the beard is horrendous, shave it off. He looks fit enough and on course for Crystal Palace.
Mousa Dembele ran with the ball and was to easily dispossessed at times, however that was often because he had nobody to pass to. A good fitness shift, Harry Kane's goal was as a result of one of his runs into the box. He'll be fit and ready for the start of the season.
Scott Parker did what Scott Parker does, stand to close to the player with the ball giving them no options and playing a predictable sideways pass either quickly or slowly. His game is limited and he needs to move on but commentary told us he doesn't want to. Thankfully he won't be playing much next season, our game dimishes with him in the side. He has had his one good season for us but your time is up now, To old, to limited. Joao Moutinho simply gave him the run and Parker couldn't stop him running the game.
Nacer Chadli has come from a lower league but he showed little to give Spurs fans encouragement. Played central and was ineffective but he normally plays wide so clearly simply out there for some fitness work. Defoe going off injured wouldn't have helped him as he then had few intelligent runs made in front of him to pass in to.
Gylfi Sigurdsson did errm, hang on I'll remember something in a minute. Was he playing, yes yes he was, well he must have done something then. Well he took corners. A totally anonymous performance as a wide man again. We are doing a brilliant job of reducing a players transfer value and taking his development backwards.
Jermain Defoe went off injured early.
Subs
Andros Townsend is not my favourite player and I have been happy to say so so I'll say now that he looked our best player quite frankly. He came on and added desire. He actually wanted to do something rather than go through the motions like his team mates. He beat opponents, scored a good goal and showed energy. With Lennon and probably Chadli in front of him in the pecking order and taking up one subs place, I still fail to see how he will even make the bench come league time.
Tom Huddlestone had 15 minutes and he was awake, passed well enough and broke up attacks, for a cameo it was better than some of his performances.
Harry Kane is still only young which people tend to forget. However to make it he needs to score goals and he doesn't take enough chances. Tucked the ball under the keeper nicely when the ball fell to him unmarked but at this level at the moment he is out of his depth. He needs a loan spell for a season to get some game practice otherwise it's a season of development football. He always works hard and puts in the effort but the doubts remain about him.
Kyle Naughton another player we can't seem to get shot of. Yet again had to cover left-back where we know he is a liability. Not the young player people think he is, will be 25 next season. Can't judge him on this, only had a short time when we were waiting for the final whistle for the last 15 minutes.
