Walker - understanding the maligned full-back role

Posted on 1:46 PM by Unknown

Over the last few articles we have looked at a tactical analysis of our game, seen a video of the basic 4-3-3 concept, what it's trying to achieve, established player roles within the system and looked specifically at our own game and how our Head Coach (Manager) Andre Villas-Boas has us operating his version of the 4-3-3 system.

The greatest area of confusion and misunderstanding is over inverted wingers and full-backs which polarises opinion about certain players, Walker being a prime example.

Traditionally full-backs played alongside centre-backs in a flat back four but that is generally no longer the case. Now the full-back starting position is well in advance of the centre-back. Next time the ball is with Hugo Lloris look at the starting positions Rose and Walker take. During the game have a quick look where they are, you'll see them much further forward than you'd expect.

In today's game the full-back is an attacking weapon who needs sprinting speed to get back and defend. Where it is usual within the system for one to attack and one to hold back, alternating depending upon which side the ball is, under AVB's version of the system they both go forward at the same time to join the attack giving us seven attackers. If we lose the ball we can initially look to hunt the ball back in numbers.

AVB likes to play with one winger who can play as a winger or cut in inside and one more traditional winger, that's the approach he adopted with his treble winning Porto side and the approach so far adopted with us. We get into problems if both wide men want to come inside all the time as we lose the element of surprise and are asking the full-back to do an immense amount of work. Constantly overlapping and constantly having to get back is tiring, fitness is key.

Let's look at defending. The full-back tucks in when defending so as not to leave a big gap between them and the centre-half the attacking team can exploit. If the ball goes to a wide man he has to rush out to them, that is his role, Walker does it well, yet fans amazingly complain that he's doing it, thinking he is out of position and not tight on his man, man marking him as it were. What he mustn't do is get to close to his central defender so that if the ball is played to the wide man there is nothing he can do about it.

It is his role, along with the wide forward to patrol the area outside the penalty area to the sideline so when defending Chadli against Arsenal should be helping Rose out when Arsenal scored, however he and Dembele don't get back in time and Capoue has to come across. Rose shouldn't have been the one to close down the player on the ball but Arsenal had worked a two-on-one situation. Had Capoue covering taken that role on Rose could have drifted wider to cover Walcott. I highlight and show a video of this not to blame Rose (he has almost been forced into this) but to demonstrate a point how one lapse can be costly.

Play the video below and stop it after just 3 seconds.

Look at the defence, Rose goes to the ball when the player inside him, which I think is Capoue, should be the one doing that so Rose can cover the wide man. Ideally it should be Dembele or Chadi there undertaking that role but they hadn't made it back yet.

Moving back to attacking, playing with advanced full-backs we then have options. The full back can stay behind the wide winger, he can come inside ready to play the ball in behind the opponents full back (Walker looks for this pass a lot with Lennon, Townsend isn't reading this pass yet) or he can overlap the winger when they come inside. The example below against Crystal Palace shows Walker about to play the ball in behind the full-back and Lennon you will notice has already set off for the pass to beat the defender to it.

Lennon is proactive, he has read the game, knows what is going to happen, Townsend understandably is still developing that understanding with Walker and is currently more reactive, he goes when the pass has been played. Many fans when they see Walker play this ball and when nobody gets on the end of it knock him calling it a bad pass, but it's not, it's the right pass, it's a defence penetrating pass, exactly what we want, so unless he over hits it it's down to the winger if he watches and doesn't get on the end of it.

By the full-back being heavily involved with attacking play when we lose the ball again the same fans complain Walker is out of position, well quite frankly he's not because that's where AVB wants him to be. I use Walker as an example here but equally the same can be said for Rose.

The three man defence, two centre-backs and holding midfield player, are tasked with holding up play until the full-back can get back. It's disappointing when Walker has to shut his Twitter account because of abuse from fans who simply don't understand the role of the modern day full-back. Let's hope Rose doesn't have to suffer the same fate.

Now with an attacking full-back overlapping the winger has an unseen role to play here.

Think about this, if you want Walker and Rose to be putting in a lot of crosses from near the byline for you, they have a long way to keep sprinting back. Now that's OK but how many times a game do you want them to do that and how long before they get tired?

What happens when a player get tired, usually late in the game, he has lapses in concentration which lead to mistakes. As a winger you can't simply cut in all the time and expect your full-back to have super human qualities and be overlapping every time. The winger has to manage the full-back if you like. If Walker or Rose has just sprinted back from the byline they need a minute or two to recover. This may simply be a thumbs up between them or the winger appreciating that next time he gets the ball he'll attack on the outside instead of cutting in to give the full-back some recovery time.

There was a prime example of this in the England game against Moldova at Wembley. Walker was beside the opposition penalty area with an England attack, however we lost the ball. He was then in picture sprinting back the full length of the pitch and caught his man before our penalty area, we won the ball back, he played it inside and obviously he needed a little breather. The ball came back over to Theo Walcott who had tucked in a third of the way into the opposition half and he simply back flicked the ball without looking and it went out for a throw in to Moldova. Walker was standing on the half way line, not expecting the flick and quite frankly not wanting it, he wanted, needed a breather. It's something simple, a piece of game management, player management, but it immediately gave the opposition the ball.

Lennon and Walker operate very well together, they have developed an understanding, they are both very quick and can help each other out defensively. Townsend on the other hand, if playing on the right, simply wants to cut in and have an eye catching shot. Great for the cameras but it puts Walker under an enormous amount of pressure to be supporting the attack overlapping to stretch the defence all the time.

For those of you shouting Bale did it, I'll remind you once again of the stats. Bale's shooting accuracy from outside the box last season was the best in Europe, 44%, Townsend's was 18% and he created nothing for his teammates either. It has it's place but greater game awareness is needed otherwise Walker is effectively playing as a winger and a full-back and has the physical effort of being in two places a t once almost.

It's end product that counts and at the moment we are not getting an end product from our wide men. They are not feeding Soldado who scores goals from inside the box. One blocked shot from a cut back in the first 80 minutes against Arsenal should tell you all you need to know. Erik Lamela will quickly need to form an understanding with Walker and be the team player Lennon is, interlaced with moments of individuality.

For Townsend to flourish as an inverted winger he has to learn when to come inside, when to go outside and to use his right foot, which Les Ferdinand tells us he is doing. Our winger options are Lennon as a traditional winger on the right, Lamela, who can use both feet, as a traditional winger who can also play like an inverted winger, Chadli, who can also use both feet, can perform the same on the left and Townsend who can play traditional on the left or inverted on the right.

Quite a few options and Rose and Walker have to form an understanding with all of them. Tough job being a full-back. Fortunately we have a set system and players come in to fill a role within that system, in their individual way, so we don't change our basic game simply because someone is injured or suspended.

Chadli and Rose seem to have struck up a working relationship very quickly, they have started to work as an attacking unit well together with Rose looking for the flicks that sets him free. I've not looked at them as a defensive unit much yet, apart from the video example of the Arsenal goal in Monday's article, only Rose in isolation so that's one for the future.

Across on the right hand side Walker and now Lamela one expects, haven't yet played together so will have to learn each others game and develop an understanding. Townsend will continue to develop his game and that will put Lennon under pressure for probably the first time.

Rose threatens Spurs again

Posted on 4:45 AM by Unknown
Danny Rose has once again tried to hold the club to ransom, clearly he is a player who overrates his own ability. I play or I leave is his message to AVB.

"This is the most I've played in pre-season," he said. “In the past I've never been able to compete fairly with Benoît.

“Benoît’s been outstanding for the last three or four years, but now we've got a manager who treats people fairly, and he’s not afraid to drop people if they’re not performing, so I hope that can work well for me this season.”

"Obviously I know Spurs have been in the top four or five clubs for the last five seasons or so, so I know it's hard for anyone to break through, but at the same time it is frustrating and it's great that now the gaffer is not afraid to drop people if you're not performing or training hard enough.

"I enjoyed every minute at Sunderland. It's a club that I'd love to go and play for again because they're the only team at this minute which has given me a chance to play week in week out.

"I enjoyed every minute of it and now I've experienced it, coming here and sitting on the bench is not something I'd be looking to do.

"I love this club, but if I don't play regularly then I'm not going to be happy, just like everyone else wouldn't be happy.

"I wouldn't be going on loan again. If I wasn't playing then a loan's not an option for me now. I want to get settled somewhere, playing week in week out."

We let's have a look just a few things wrong in the Espanyol game and why you had better move on then.

We have previously discussed his poor positioning and a defesive weakness with balls played inside him as a result and Espanyol exploited that by simply passing round him. We have an aerial weakness from set pieces and his size is of no help in that situation at all. Going forward Danny Rose has something to offer every team, indeed he won a penalty for us, but for all his attacking the bottom line is he only put in one decent cross, the rest didn't even beat the first man. He linked up well going forward but his first priority is defending and he was poor at it again.

Within the first 20 minutes Rose fell over with nobody near him to allow the Espanyol wide man free access to the byline and penalty area, however having attacked the box they failed to take advantage in the way they should have. We could have conceded a goal against better opposition (Espanyol finished 13th in La Liga).

After 21 minutes they attacked down our right and he backtracked with their attacker, all well and good except the attacker was ball side of him so a decent ball in and the attacker would have a clear chance. Fortunately Walker prevented that.

After 37 minutes a poor clearance straight to their attacker 19 yards from goal gave them another chance and he just trotted out from the byline. That's two we could have conceded.

After 38 minutes a ball is played to the wide mans chest and Rose with no chance of getting the ball simply goes into his back to give away a free kick 5 yards into our own half. A chance to pump the ball into our box.

After 43 minutes he is beaten and chops the attacker down 6 yards from the byline. The effort from the free kick is blocked and Espanyol score from the corner. No free kick, no corner no goal.

After 45 minutes a poor pass in their half leads to a counter attack with our whole left side out the game.

After 56 minutes a poor pass down the line straight to the opposition.

After 70 minutes he is out of position and has to commit a foul to give them another set-piece opportunity.

After 76 minutes he unfortunately gets an arm in the face and the cut cheek just below the eye forces him off a minute later.

On the plus side good attacking play and won a penalty but we could have conceded 3 or 4 down our left with better finishing. It was a performance that was better than some he has been putting in but we can not afford the defensive errors that let the opposition attack our goal.

Rose is not good enough to be a first choice left-back in a top 4 tea, Would Man City, Man Utd or Chelsea pick him? No, then why does that make him good enough for us? It doesn't, he isn't, it's the bench or goodbye.

Spurs left sided weakness

Posted on 1:00 PM by Unknown
The season is one week away and Spurs have a major problem, no fit central defenders.

The situation is to put it mildly is far from ideal, with Dawson, who didn't take part in a training ground friendly yesterday against Enfield Town, arguably the only central defender likely to be fit for Saturday.

We are going to have the situation again where Spurs start the season with a weakened eleven through injury and not getting players through the door in time.

There is a week to go to get in a left back but it is looking increasingly likely that we are going to have to play Zeki Fryers and Danny Rose on the left hand side of our defence. That is a huge concern and a big weak spot.

Any manager worth his salt will devise a game plan to attack us in that area. Fryers will probably have to deputise centrally, with Vertonghen highly unlikely to make it back from injury in time, although he retains some hope. Ball and Stewart don't have the experience required, not that Fryers has much either.

Kaboul and Sandro, as expected, are not fit which weakens the spine of our side but it's the left where we are likely to concede if we do.

Danny Rose has huge trouble with the ball played inside him as we have seen in the pre-season friendlies he has played. He is not sure whether to step up, go with a runner or stand his ground, whatever he has chosen so far hasn't worked. The problem is his positional play, he is to far from his central defender, he needs to shorten the gap between them.

If the player on the ball  hasn't been pushed in midfield then Rose needs to make him play wide. Aaron Lennon worked on last season and is working on in pre-season cutting in behind the full-back to a ball played inside him, which is exactly how Rose gets caught out regularly.

A player will often look down at the ball before he plays the pass, so as a defender if you can read the game you'll know what's about to happen and can move that split second earlier to prevent it. If you can't read the game then you are simply reacting to what has already happened and you will struggle. If you combine that with allowing the ball to be played inside you, you are on a hiding to nothing and that's Rose's biggest weakness.

The main principle of 4-3-3 defending is to not ball watch, cover dangerous space and keep an eye on your opponent while adjusting, you want to push them, where you want them and not let them dictate to you.

The responsibilities of the full-back defensively are:
a) Quick pressure on the ball when wide forward is in possession
b) Strong and confident tackles; no diving in
c) Stay compact to support central defenders and close down dangerous space
d) Provide depth and balance on opposite side of attack; cover for otherʼs mistakes.
e) Scan the field to make certain all players are marked; no ball watching!

The responsibilities of the central defenders are:
a) Constant communication with back line; play as one
b) Delay central attack, don't dive in; be strong and decisive tackling
c) Quick pressure on he ball with partner in supportive space
d) Stay compact in centre, cover dangerous space
e) Cover for outside defenders if they are beat
f) Be strong in the air clearing high balls

If the gap between full-back and central defender is to big that creates problems for the defence.

Zeki Fryers is a left-back so playing on the left of central defence (Dawson plays right) part of his role is covering for the left back. He is inexperienced centrally so it is hardly surprising the pair of them are disjointed in their approach and not functioning as a unit. Espanyol tomorrow will be another opportunity to develop a little more understanding, if Rose and Fryers play together.

There is another option and that is to play Kyle Naughton. In the behind closed doors friendly against Enfield Town Naughton played left-back for the whole 90 minutes while Rose got 45 minutes as a right-back. In the pre-season games Rose has featured but I have a feeling that Naughton may well start left back a week on Saturday, if not against Espanyol.

He is not ideal either but at least he had some experience there for us and AVB last season. We have to make the best of it and Naughton is probably a better defender than Rose, whilst Rose might offer more when attacking. Naughton has greater defensive positional sense, without which any full-back will struggle and Fryers will need the strongest defensive left-back we have.

Somewhat surprising therefore that Benoit Assou-Ekotto has hardly been seen in pre-season. It doesn't take a genius to work out AVB doesn't like him and when he has occasionally given him a little bit of game time Benny has sometimes gone through the motions. But in the squad as it is at the moment he is the best we have and surely his experience would be of huge benefit to Fryers.

The other option is to buy an experienced left back and reports suggest Fabio Coentrao will be signing next week for around £13 million, but no point in counting chickens until it happens, fingers crossed it does though.

Newly promoted teams give it their all at the start of their Premier League adventures and Palace are going to be on the box as well. We can not afford to be stumbling against sides like this but our weakness on the left and then from set pieces is a concern. It gives them an opportunity they shouldn't have.

One tactic to counter the threat is to push the player with the ball inside in midfield. If we are playing 4-3-3, and that's not a certainty, Dembele on the left of a midfield three and Chadli would have to work together to stop them exploiting the weak spot in the system, out wide. Pushing the opposition more central gives us a numerical advantage and makes defending easier then.

Last year Everton used a tactic effectively, drawing us to our right with a winger staying wide on the left touch line and then Leighton Baines playing long cross field balls to him level with our penalty area, he then had time and space to attack our left back. It's a tactic I can see Crystal Palace using, give a winger time and space to run at a defender and potentially you are in trouble, it's exactly the situation we would want to get Lennon into.

Up until now we haven't seen Paulinho and Dembele together so hopefully the Espanyol game will give us an indication of how we'll be playing this season. I'll be enjoying the game but I'll also be looking to see how we deal with our left sided weakness.

Bale injured, Rose to stay at Spurs

Posted on 8:39 AM by Unknown

Andre Villas-Boas has spoken in Hong Kong ahead of tomorrows game against Sunderland in the Asia Trophy and confirmed that Sunderland target Danny Rose, will stay at Tottenham Hotspur next season.

“Danny has had an excellent season. He’s one of the players that we all want for our future,” Villas-Boas said.

“It was one of those occasions where it’s all worked out extremely well for him and he will definitely be part of our squad this season.

“Credit to him for making it work. This year he’ll want to be involved with Tottenham and hopefully he’ll have a big future ahead of him.”

Villas-Boas also announced that Gareth Bale is still recovering from the injury he picked up in training before the 0-0 draw against Colchester which both he ans Aaron Lennon sat out.

“On Gareth I want to repeat what I was telling you last season and what I was telling you from the beginning of pre-season so I cannot extend myself,” he said.

“He’s a player that we are willing to continue to have, he’s a Tottenham player, he’s one of the most fantastic players in the world at the moment and we are counting on him for the future.

“Unfortunately against Sunderland (tomorrow) he won’t be fit to play, he’s recovering from a knock he had in training so we expect him hopefully to have some involvement in the second game.”

Does signing Daniel Opare make sense?

Posted on 1:34 PM by Unknown
There are claims we are looking at Daniel Opare, a 22 year-old  full-back from Standard Liege. He is primarily a right-back but can play on the left. The fact that he is right footed doesn't make him an ideal candidate to overlap from left-back, the defensive position we are looking to fill.

The Gunners were linked with the Ghanaian international in February last year and now it is believed new Technical Director Franco Baldini has recommended him to Andre Villas-Boas. Opare may only cost about £1.3 million (€1.5 million) but with Walker cemented at right-back and Adam Smith coming through it would seem a strange signing.

There are doubts about Zeki Fryers and Danny Rose, but surely we would be looking for a specialist left-back and preferably left-footed. However quotes from the player would suggest we are truely interested.

He said: "I am flattered by the interest of Spurs. They are a very good team in England I will jump at the chance to join them if they reach an agreement with my current club.

"I know there is a long way to go yet and also the level in England is a lot higher than in Belgium, but I think I can play there at a good level.

"If I get the chance to play for a team like Tottenham I will take it."

Opare came through the Real Madrid academy and played for the Spanish sides reserve team before moving to Standard three years ago. Is the Premier League his next stop.

Ar2ena1

Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 1 Ar2ena1

Before getting into the grains of this article, I wanted to vent my frustrations on some BBC pundits who still, even though we won, insisted on saying the following;

"Oh just look at the wonderful football Arsène Wenger's side play".

Listen sunshine, you aren't given points based on your overall possession. You get points by either stopping the other team, or by putting the ball into the back of the net.

Arsenal did neither last night. They couldn't manage a shot on goal until the eightieth minute, which either translates into them thinking they're far better than Spurs and can simply walk the ball in, or, something is terribly wrong with them.

Shout out to Gomes. He was fantastic!

With the entire Arsenal loving aside, last night really was an occasion for nibbling ones nails clean off and sitting on the edge of your seat.

The atmosphere was magnificent last night. And what can be said of "that goal"? As Glenn Hoddle said, "That lad [Danny Rose] has bought himself 10 years with these fans".

To be honest with you, I'll be remembering that goal for a lot longer than 10 years, as will a lot of you.

"Bale, Bale, Bale".

How did our left winger elude the entire Arsenal backline and end up where he did to tuck away the goal? Let's not forget the ball in from Defoe.

Anyway, enough said.

Spurs 2 - 1 Ar2ena1

PS. Heurelho, you are a star.

That Livermore Looks Pretty Decent

Posted on 2:05 PM by Unknown
Jake Livermore played a blinder in tonights game. Okay, so he only played a part of the match, but I can see why Harry got him to sign a contract extension.

The midfielder got his head onto the end of a Assou-Ekotto cross to level the game against Barcelona.

Not only does Livermore look like a Rugby League player, but he's agile, gets stuck in and above all, looks like he's got heart.

With Naughton making his debut, as well as Bostock, Rose and Dervite, the future looks lillywhite. Let's hope Harry allows the kids to flourish this season.

I'll tell you what though; we could be seeing a lot more of Jake Livermore.
