Developing players

Posted on 1:30 AM by Unknown
There was an interesting article in the Daily Mail recently about former England player Ugo Ehiogu and his part-time work with our Under 16's while he is taking his coaching badges.

Ugo Ehiogu is taking his first steps towards eventually gaining his elite coaching badge and part of that is analysing the game so he has looked at the fact England have no structure, no DNA as he puts it, for how England are to play. He goes on then to tell us that Spurs do have a DNA in place.

He says "In my role as assistant U16 coach at Tottenham, there is a clear DNA outlined at the club through out the academy ages.

"That DNA is laid out and passed down from Tim Sherwood, Head of Football Development, John McDermott, Head of Academy, and the wonderfully experienced Chris Ramsey, who is Senior Professional Phase Coach.

"The way that Tottenham teams play is clear and all the coaches know what is expected of them. The emphasis is on technique at a very early age and the idea is to try and produce players who can progress into the first team, or go on and make a living in the game."

The important and often missed point on supporters there is at the very end of those remarks, "produce players who can progress into the first team, or go on and make a living in the game."

Our Development squad is not all about producing players for Spurs, yes obviously they want to, but as a club you cherry pick the very best, the rest you bring on and develop to be sold for a sum that then pays for the system to continue. Sales of players who come through the development system should pay for the whole system to operate, that's how Barcelona do it, Real Madrid do it, the principle is he same at Spurs.

Football is a ruthless business and ruthless decisions have to be made regarding youngsters. Opinions rage but take someone like Harry Kane, eventually a decision will have to be made, is he going to be good enough or do we sell. Then you have to decide if you choose to sell, when do you sell? How far do you develop a player, the more development the bigger selling fee.

The loan system is crucial in this and we have recently embraced it under the guidance of Tim Sherwood. Now we have a whole host of youngsters go out on loan to gain first team competitive football experience. Remember these are young lads and they are often having to move away from home to new digs and look after themselves. They are learning to grow as a person as well as a footballer.

We have clearly formed an unofficial link with Swindon. I have no doubt that Sherwood has had extensive chats with senior figures at the club and others, to discuss playing style and player development. Swindon will have presumably been settled on as a club who want to develop playing passing and moving football on the floor. We can then send players to Swindon knowing they are continuing to learn and develop in the style we wish them to.

Such an arrangement would suit both clubs, having the arrangement with more than one club and at a different level would give our youngsters stepping stones. Obviously we still need to use other clubs, we have so many to send out on loan afterall but links with a couple give us a framework to build around.

Often in the older players contracts is a clause that they play a senior game, which is where the League Cup is so useful or European ties like Thursday when you can give some youngsters a game with some experienced players.

I'm looking forward to Thursday, it may be almost a dead game but I'm expecting to see Tom Carroll and Zeki Fryers start with Harry Kane getting some game time and possible a couple of others with later substitute roles.

Giancarlo Galilifuoco - from Aussie junior football to Spurs

Posted on 12:30 PM by Unknown
A kid from a junior club in Australia to the Under 21's at Tottenham, that's quite an upheaval, that's quite a journey but it's the one made by Giancarlo Galilifuoco.

Playing for the Sutherland Sharks juniors, a team from south of Sydney, he travelled to Italy for a trial and received a call from his mate and Spurs youngster Massimo Luongo.

Q - How did a youngster from Sydney get to end up at Tottenham?

“I was trialling in Italy but I was signed to a club in Australia, and while I was trialling in Italy, I was talking to Massimo (Luongo).”

“A club in Italy had offered me a contract and I told Massimo, and he talked to Tim (Sherwood) and some people here, and then from there, they got in contact with me and I flew here.”

While part of the Australian Institute of Sport’s football program, they told him that he simply wasn’t good enough for a professional football career. Well no kid wants to hear that so he did what kids do, he didn't listen.

Q - Are you happy you didn't give up on your dream?

“I feel incredibly happy that I didn’t let somebody’s opinion change me, or my game.”

“I’m very happy that I worked hard, but I do have to pinch myself that a club like Tottenham appreciated me and took a chance on me, and I’m now the player that I’m becoming.”

Giancarlo arrived at Spurs in February 2012 as an 18 year-old. He had never seen anything like our training facilities, and that was the old place not the spanking new state of the art complex we now have.

Q - What did you think of the facilities and how have you improved as a player?

“Even in the old place, I’d never seen facilities like that before. I’d never seen a football culture like England before.

“It’s hard to say one specific thing. I think as a player all-round I have got better. As a person being away from home, I’ve matured, and I feel like my football has matured. I’m more responsible now, on the pitch.

"I feel very good and very happy at Tottenham. I consider myself a very lucky footballer to be at such a club. You get looked after very well here."

Put yourself in his shoes for a minute, a young kid from Australia, not a major footballing power, told he is not good enough, now in a strange country the other side of the world and he plays against Barcelona at White Hart Lane, with a big crowd present in the NextGen Series. What a thrill that must have been for him, can you imagine how he must have felt.

Q - What was it like playing in that match?

“It was unbelievable. There were a lot of people there, it was incredible. It’s beautiful there."

Q - Now as we all know AVB loves a versatile player, what is your position.

“My preferred position is defensive midfield, but I love centre back as well. There’s one player that comes to mind, but he’s incredibly good, and I’m not trying to say I’m as good as him, but I feel like I could play a similar style to Patrick Vieira.

“He was smart in possession, tall and powerful, wins a lot of the ball, but his range is long, but he’s responsible, and has a big stride pattern."

Q - What is it like working with Andre Villa-Boas?

“He’s awesome. He’s a very good coach, I love training with him, I love his training drills. Every tip and bit of advice he’s given me has been very good.  He told me he was pleased with the way I was progressing and he urged me to work even harder so he could make me a better player.

Q - And what of Gareth Bale Giancarlo?

“Unbelievable, incredible, fantastic, and any other adjective you can think of. When you train with players like him, it brings out the best in you, because their touch is perfect, their pass is perfect, their movement is perfect. You have to keep up with that, and you find yourself competing with these players. It’s great.”

Now 19 he is hoping to make the next breakthrough which will be into the first team squad. Loans will come first of course to gain experience.

Q - What does the future hold for you?

"I am the kind of person who does not like to look too much into the future. I would much rather concentrate on my next step. I have trained many times with the first team under three of the best coaches in Europe so that has helped me a lot.

"So far this season I have trained as much with my group as with the first team. In fact I did a few sessions of pre-season with the first team and the good thing is that the coaches seem to be happy with me.

"I have played with the first team in a friendly against Enfield Town and I feel I have progressed to such an extent that I am a more reliable player. If I keep working hard and well I feel like my chance will come this season. I hope so, anyway. Being in the squad for a competitive game would be a great step forward for me. More importantly I can feel like a professional player now."

Let the Development squad develop

Posted on 1:27 PM by Unknown
If you spend some time reading any Spurs forums you'll find all sorts of views and supporters suggesting giving player X or player Y a chance and others suggesting a youth player or two from the Development squad, such as Alex Pritchard.

Now i'll focus on Pritchard just to use him as an example but Shaqiile Coulthirst, our goal scoring 18 year-old centre-forward, is a name frequently advanced as the answer to our striking woes. Possibly such suggestions come from people who have never seen a development game and are merely going on reputations. Alex Pritchard is a talented youngster, let's make no mistake about that.

Fortunately we have just had an Under 20 World Cup televised, with both Harry Kane and Alex Pritchard in the England squad. Harry Kane incidentally played 90 minutes in all three games, usually up front on his own and worked tirelessly in the heat. He laid on goals but unfortunately was not clinical enough in front of goal, something which constantly divides Spurs fans view of him.

Anyway back to Pritchard who made substitute appearances for England in the tournament. He had an impact on the games when he came on. He looked lively, tricky, skillful, he looked to have an eye for a pass, he looked very promising indeed. He understandably looked small, as if he had more growing to do, which obviously he has, and certainly not ready for playing against more physical men in the Premier League.

Some supporters often don't seem to see, or understand, the difference in standard and physique between development players and Premier League players.

Three of our youngsters have gone on loan to Swindon Town in League One, joining other former development players of ours. There will be a contingent of 6 there for the 2013-14 season. On loan are wide midfielder Alex Pritchard, central midfielder Massimo Luongo and centre-back Grant Hall. Former players who have signed for the Wiltshire club are defender Jack Barthram and fellow defender Nathan Byrne, who we released at the end of last season, joining another defender Troy Archibald-Henville already there.

The five new players are staying in a hotel at the moment while taking part in pre-season training and are all looking to find somewhere to live before the season starts.

Interviewed by the local paper Luongo had some revealing words to say to the local press, revealing to many Tottenham fans that is.

“I have been at Spurs for three years, but Nath, Pritch and Jack have been there even longer since they were youngsters,” he said.

“We’re all pretty close down there and shared the same changing room, and coming down here it’s like walking into a Spurs changing room which makes things a lot easier.

“We all want to play and we all want first-team experience because none of us are anywhere near making it as a footballer, so this is the biggest challenge we have to prove ourselves.

“This platform is the best experience we can have and it’s great we can all be here.

“We are in the hotel for now, but I am looking for a place around here and I want to get settled as soon as I can. All the boys are going to find a place, because it’s so much easier to play when you are settled.”

Let me pluck out the relevant passage for us Spurs fans, 'none of us are anywhere near making it as a footballer'.

A development player telling you himself that development players are not ready for the Premier League.

Players in the Development squad are just that developing, loan spell, new experiences, first team football in the lower leagues is all a part of their development, both as players and people. Banging in goals against other youth players does not make a player ready for the Premier League, that will come in time, can we not just let them develop.

Throwing a player in to early can ruin him or stall his development, John Bostock it could be argued was a victim of this, becoming our youngest ever player when he made in debut in the UEFA Cup.

Let's have a bit of common sense and not suggest this season that we throw another one into the lions den.
