Walker - understanding the maligned full-back role

Posted on 1:46 PM by Unknown

Over the last few articles we have looked at a tactical analysis of our game, seen a video of the basic 4-3-3 concept, what it's trying to achieve, established player roles within the system and looked specifically at our own game and how our Head Coach (Manager) Andre Villas-Boas has us operating his version of the 4-3-3 system.

The greatest area of confusion and misunderstanding is over inverted wingers and full-backs which polarises opinion about certain players, Walker being a prime example.

Traditionally full-backs played alongside centre-backs in a flat back four but that is generally no longer the case. Now the full-back starting position is well in advance of the centre-back. Next time the ball is with Hugo Lloris look at the starting positions Rose and Walker take. During the game have a quick look where they are, you'll see them much further forward than you'd expect.

In today's game the full-back is an attacking weapon who needs sprinting speed to get back and defend. Where it is usual within the system for one to attack and one to hold back, alternating depending upon which side the ball is, under AVB's version of the system they both go forward at the same time to join the attack giving us seven attackers. If we lose the ball we can initially look to hunt the ball back in numbers.

AVB likes to play with one winger who can play as a winger or cut in inside and one more traditional winger, that's the approach he adopted with his treble winning Porto side and the approach so far adopted with us. We get into problems if both wide men want to come inside all the time as we lose the element of surprise and are asking the full-back to do an immense amount of work. Constantly overlapping and constantly having to get back is tiring, fitness is key.

Let's look at defending. The full-back tucks in when defending so as not to leave a big gap between them and the centre-half the attacking team can exploit. If the ball goes to a wide man he has to rush out to them, that is his role, Walker does it well, yet fans amazingly complain that he's doing it, thinking he is out of position and not tight on his man, man marking him as it were. What he mustn't do is get to close to his central defender so that if the ball is played to the wide man there is nothing he can do about it.

It is his role, along with the wide forward to patrol the area outside the penalty area to the sideline so when defending Chadli against Arsenal should be helping Rose out when Arsenal scored, however he and Dembele don't get back in time and Capoue has to come across. Rose shouldn't have been the one to close down the player on the ball but Arsenal had worked a two-on-one situation. Had Capoue covering taken that role on Rose could have drifted wider to cover Walcott. I highlight and show a video of this not to blame Rose (he has almost been forced into this) but to demonstrate a point how one lapse can be costly.

Play the video below and stop it after just 3 seconds.

Look at the defence, Rose goes to the ball when the player inside him, which I think is Capoue, should be the one doing that so Rose can cover the wide man. Ideally it should be Dembele or Chadi there undertaking that role but they hadn't made it back yet.

Moving back to attacking, playing with advanced full-backs we then have options. The full back can stay behind the wide winger, he can come inside ready to play the ball in behind the opponents full back (Walker looks for this pass a lot with Lennon, Townsend isn't reading this pass yet) or he can overlap the winger when they come inside. The example below against Crystal Palace shows Walker about to play the ball in behind the full-back and Lennon you will notice has already set off for the pass to beat the defender to it.

Lennon is proactive, he has read the game, knows what is going to happen, Townsend understandably is still developing that understanding with Walker and is currently more reactive, he goes when the pass has been played. Many fans when they see Walker play this ball and when nobody gets on the end of it knock him calling it a bad pass, but it's not, it's the right pass, it's a defence penetrating pass, exactly what we want, so unless he over hits it it's down to the winger if he watches and doesn't get on the end of it.

By the full-back being heavily involved with attacking play when we lose the ball again the same fans complain Walker is out of position, well quite frankly he's not because that's where AVB wants him to be. I use Walker as an example here but equally the same can be said for Rose.

The three man defence, two centre-backs and holding midfield player, are tasked with holding up play until the full-back can get back. It's disappointing when Walker has to shut his Twitter account because of abuse from fans who simply don't understand the role of the modern day full-back. Let's hope Rose doesn't have to suffer the same fate.

Now with an attacking full-back overlapping the winger has an unseen role to play here.

Think about this, if you want Walker and Rose to be putting in a lot of crosses from near the byline for you, they have a long way to keep sprinting back. Now that's OK but how many times a game do you want them to do that and how long before they get tired?

What happens when a player get tired, usually late in the game, he has lapses in concentration which lead to mistakes. As a winger you can't simply cut in all the time and expect your full-back to have super human qualities and be overlapping every time. The winger has to manage the full-back if you like. If Walker or Rose has just sprinted back from the byline they need a minute or two to recover. This may simply be a thumbs up between them or the winger appreciating that next time he gets the ball he'll attack on the outside instead of cutting in to give the full-back some recovery time.

There was a prime example of this in the England game against Moldova at Wembley. Walker was beside the opposition penalty area with an England attack, however we lost the ball. He was then in picture sprinting back the full length of the pitch and caught his man before our penalty area, we won the ball back, he played it inside and obviously he needed a little breather. The ball came back over to Theo Walcott who had tucked in a third of the way into the opposition half and he simply back flicked the ball without looking and it went out for a throw in to Moldova. Walker was standing on the half way line, not expecting the flick and quite frankly not wanting it, he wanted, needed a breather. It's something simple, a piece of game management, player management, but it immediately gave the opposition the ball.

Lennon and Walker operate very well together, they have developed an understanding, they are both very quick and can help each other out defensively. Townsend on the other hand, if playing on the right, simply wants to cut in and have an eye catching shot. Great for the cameras but it puts Walker under an enormous amount of pressure to be supporting the attack overlapping to stretch the defence all the time.

For those of you shouting Bale did it, I'll remind you once again of the stats. Bale's shooting accuracy from outside the box last season was the best in Europe, 44%, Townsend's was 18% and he created nothing for his teammates either. It has it's place but greater game awareness is needed otherwise Walker is effectively playing as a winger and a full-back and has the physical effort of being in two places a t once almost.

It's end product that counts and at the moment we are not getting an end product from our wide men. They are not feeding Soldado who scores goals from inside the box. One blocked shot from a cut back in the first 80 minutes against Arsenal should tell you all you need to know. Erik Lamela will quickly need to form an understanding with Walker and be the team player Lennon is, interlaced with moments of individuality.

For Townsend to flourish as an inverted winger he has to learn when to come inside, when to go outside and to use his right foot, which Les Ferdinand tells us he is doing. Our winger options are Lennon as a traditional winger on the right, Lamela, who can use both feet, as a traditional winger who can also play like an inverted winger, Chadli, who can also use both feet, can perform the same on the left and Townsend who can play traditional on the left or inverted on the right.

Quite a few options and Rose and Walker have to form an understanding with all of them. Tough job being a full-back. Fortunately we have a set system and players come in to fill a role within that system, in their individual way, so we don't change our basic game simply because someone is injured or suspended.

Chadli and Rose seem to have struck up a working relationship very quickly, they have started to work as an attacking unit well together with Rose looking for the flicks that sets him free. I've not looked at them as a defensive unit much yet, apart from the video example of the Arsenal goal in Monday's article, only Rose in isolation so that's one for the future.

Across on the right hand side Walker and now Lamela one expects, haven't yet played together so will have to learn each others game and develop an understanding. Townsend will continue to develop his game and that will put Lennon under pressure for probably the first time.

The Townsend Debate - his game minute by minute

Posted on 1:00 AM by Unknown
Andros Townsend is a player who divides opinion among the Tottenham faithful. The Lennon haters want Townsend to replace Lennon, the Lennon lovers think Townsend isn't up to the required standard for a top 4 Premier League side.

He played against an awful Dinamo Tiblsi team in the Europa League qualifier away from home on Thursday and the 5-0 scoreline tells you all you need to know about the opposition. Now there will be plenty of sites who will a match report and tell you how wonderful Townsend was so I have taken a different approach for you.

I had a critical look at his performance which on the surface caught the eye, but does it stand up to scrutiny?

I'll lay my cards on the table and say I'm not a fan, he has to win me over, however I am seeing things in him that show, with work he could be quite a player. I've looked at his performance last night with my mind on Premier League defences and the way they defend.

Many fans merely look at an individual rather than the team, how it all fits together and the required pieces of jigsaw needed to fill it. A player has to fit a system otherwise the system has to be changed just for him and unless you are a certain Welshman that isn't going to happen. We have to appreciate what we require from a wide man in the Premier League in our system.

We need him to drop back to defend into a 4-5-1 system and break forward either in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. Either way we need them to create width to stretch the defence allowing gaps for our midfield runners to arrive late in the penalty area. Our wide men need to be able to beat their full-backs on the outside and cross on the run with little time and space. They also need pace and an ability at times to cut in and shoot or pick a pass.

Our modus operandi on the right is for Walker to play balls inside the full-back for a wide man to run behind or for the wide man to cut inside and allow Walker to overlap, but there again plenty of fans think Walker can't cross a ball.

Townsend was picked to play on the right where my views prior to the game were that he would always cut inside on his left foot, which is fine if you are on the break but not if you have a midfield and defensive wall in front of you or you want late arriving midfielders. Continually cutting inside doesn't suit our system in the Premier League with Soldado as an in the box poacher. Premier League defences will happily usher a wide man inside to a crowded area backing themselves to smother them out.

So let's get on and look at Townsend's game.

First half begins.
2 mins - Ball given away cutting inside to centre of pitch 40 yards from goal.
5 mins - Poor control knocks the ball out for a throw in.
7 mins - In centre of field makes a short pass to Dembele.
8 mins - Cuts into the centre 40 yards from goal ending up in the inside right position.
10 mins - Inside left position plays simple pass back to teammate.
12 mins - Break from corner and runs centrally, not closed down, not tackled and allowed to shoot to score.

For the first 12 minutes every time he has had the ball he has run inside offering no width, then takes an opportunity and scores an eye catching individual goal. Well done, pat on the back. He took it very well but it was made as easy possible for him and he wouldn't be allowed that run without being closed down or tackled in the Premier League. If you think Bale verses Norwich City he had to ride a tackle that tried to bring him down and beat a defender  who closed him down. None the less he did what he had to do and he did it well and at the end of the day that's all you can do.

15 mins - Receives ball and cuts inside towards the middle.
16 mins - Receives ball and cuts inside towards the middle again and stays at centre forward.
17 mins - Goes outside his man for the first time but attempted right footed cross is feeble.
20 mins - He receives the ball 15 yards from goal 5 yards from the centre, loses possession but it bobbles back to him off the defender and he is fouled in a dangerous position.
26 mins - Out wide he plays a simple pass backwards.
30 mins - Central he loses the ball.
31 mins - Cuts inside to centre, simple pass and stays there for the next 2 minutes.

In 31 minutes he has gone outside his man once and run into the centre 8 times. All very predictable and exactly what Premier League defences want, easier to defend against at that level. Whilst he is catching the eye, all he doing is cutting inside and this is the big problem in his game if he is to be played on the right in the Premier League. Ideally he needs to learn what Bobby Charlton did and train himself to use his wrong foot.

33 mins - Out wide he plays a good short ball inside, however he then walks backwards and we are only 22 yards from goal. When the ball breaks free in space, he is not ready for it and can't take advantage of the space available.
34 mins - Out wide good first time flick inside as he is bundled over from behind.
35 mins - He is to be found standing centrally, passes the ball wide 40 yards from goal.
39 mins - Break in play and AVB has a word which hand gestures appear to be saying, get out wide.

At the time I was thinking, indeed hoping AVB was telling him to stay wide. attack on the outside and stop cutting in so much. For the remainder of the half he did just that, staying wide, creating width to stretch the defence and create gaps for others to exploit.

42 mins - Plays a give and go with Naughton (good ball from Naughton) out wide and attacks on the outside, drags back to his left foot and the defender sits on the floor. With all the time in the world a lovely little dink to an unmarked Paulinho arriving. Simple header, goal.

Half time and receiving all the plaudits from Carlisle but brought down to earth by the studio guests who tell us how abysmal the Dinamo Tiblisi defence is. They are but you can only play what is in front of you. He has had a good half but cut inside far too much.

Second half begins.
53 mins - Cuts inside and loses the ball.
56 mins - Edge of own box centrally runs the ball out of play on the left.
57 mins - Attacks his man from wide on the outside, leaves him for dead and simple pull back for Spldado to score.
63 mins - Inside left position edge of box dinks ball over defence for Paulinho overhead kick.
65 mins - Good simple ball inside to teammate.
73 mins - Cuts inside and loses possession.
74 mins - For the second time in the game he runs with the ball in space and there is no tackle on him again, ball bobbles as he shoots and it goes high and wide.
79 mins - Cuts inside low left footed cross comes to nothing.
82 mins - Runs out of defence, cuts inside, pass to Chadli.
83 mins - Attacks full-back and loses possession.
85 mins - Centre forward position misplaced pass.

He did well against the opposition and will certainly play in the return leg at White Hart Lane next Thursday, as for the league, there was far too much cutting inside. His whole game shouts me, me, me. It's all about him having shots, it's almost as if he thinks he is Gareth Bale.

To have any chance of taking Lennon's place he has to extend his game and attack the outside, which he can do on the left of course. If he can learn to do that on the right, then he'll be a player, until that time he'll continue to be an understudy.

To be fair to him when AVB had a word after 39 minutes to tell him stay wide, he did for the rest of the game until the dying minutes and that helped us immensely. His runs were towards goal or out wide generally, rather than the previous right angled runs into the centre of the pitch.

I know I sound very critical but if people want to improve they have to look critically at performances and sometime be harsh and yes I do know you also have to pat on the back. He was Man of the Match and Dawson wasn't far behind as he was carrying Kaboul who was very rusty as isn't ready for a weekend start yet. He is not fit enough and was clumsy on the ball.

If you think of Nacer Chadli's Bale like cross for Soldado's second goal, that is what you are saying you don't want if you want Townsend on the right, he can't play that ball with his right foot. That's the element of his game he needs to learn if on the right, on the left he can play it. previously we have had nobody to tuck this type of cross in, Defoe and Ade are never there for the tap in. Now we have a quality striker who is so the more of these we can play the better. Stop playing them and you are taking a supply line away from our main goalscorer, we can't do that in the Premier League.

Townsend now needs to play the return leg before playing against tougher opposition in the tournament but this was another encouraging performance, there is something to work with and it'll be down to him if he wants to do the work. If he does he could take his game to a whole new level.

Atsu, Parker, Huddlestone, Livermore, Carroll, Townsend, Damiao, Rami, Defoe, Sigurdsson

Posted on 2:16 AM by Unknown
Christian Atsu the Porto winger who played under Andre Villas-Boas is once again being mentioned as a target. That lovely journalistic phrase that has no source and with information the journalist wouldn't know anyway is used, "Spurs are weighing up a move." So some journalist knows what is being discussed behind closed doors at White Hart Lane does he? Sounds like pure guesswork, make enough guesses and some must be right.

Hull City are in advanced talks with Tom Huddlestone over a £5 million move. Don't get your hopes up folks, Huddlestone has had advanced talks for over a year with half a dozen clubs and never puts pen to paper. He is not on big wages but lacks any ambition. He is the anonymous employee who never misses a day, does a dead end job and never complains, he just does it and thinks the company thinks the world of him for doing it. Hull are trying to tempt him though by taking Jake Livermore on loan so he'll have a buddy alongside him!

Championship side Watford who narrowly missed promotion last year and have started well this year, want highly-rated midfielder Tom Carroll on loan. I would have thought a Premier League loan would get him the game time he needs to develop.

Once again QPR want Scott Parker but wages remain the issue. Parker doesn't really want to leave but he would be so far down the pecking order he'd never play in a World Cup year. Their have been reports that he would be speaking with Roy Hodgson to see if playing in the Championship would damage his chances of going to the World Cup so only if he gets the right answers would he go. If negotiations are heavily underway perhaps he has received those assurances. However there are reports that Fulham have now entered the fray which would be a more sensible move for him.

QPR also want Andros Townsend back but surely he also would want to play in the Premier League. He is unlikely to get much game time at Tottenham being behind Bale, Lennon, Chadli and Sigurdsson, with possibly another to come. His future at Spurs depends upon the system AVB wants to play when Sandro is fit or Capoue is confirmed, will it still be 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3? If it's the later we are likely to sign another striker and his days are numbered. Clearly the spell at QPR last season brought him along and he would surely do a job for a Premier League team, having shown up well in pre-season cameos.

According to French sports daily L'Equipe, Zenit St. Petersburg have offered Internacional £21.47 million (€25m) for Leandro Damiao which meets club president Giovanni Luigi's inflated valuation.

Andre Villas Boas has declared that Jermain Defoe and Gylfi Sigurdsson will not be sold this summer, according to SkySports. Adebayor is the striker the club are desperate to shift, universally disliked it seems the club want shot of him.

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly turned to Valencia's £9.5 million (€11.06m) rated defender Adil Rami in our search for a new centre-half. Toby Alderweireld is also continually talked about but ITK suggests we rejected him early in the window as having a major weakness in his game.
