Sol Campbell, fans' favourite

Posted on 6:49 AM by Unknown
Sol Campbell’s departure from Notts County was the most predictable football story of the season so far. The prospect of a recent Premier League regular plying his trade in League Two was an unlikely scenario, but the chances of the big fish sticking at it in a little pond for too long were particularly slim considering the individual involved.

County fans can join the growing list of supporters disgruntled by Campbell’s own inimitable transfer market conduct. The anger and disappointment felt by Spurs fans has obviously not been matched, but it is worth remembering that Campbell is not on Arsène Wenger’s Christmas card list.

The Arsenal boss allowed Campbell to leave on the understanding he would not join a rival Premier League club. Hardly a betrayal on the scale of his free transfer across North London, but still part of a notable pattern for a player adept at filling his pockets with signing-on fees.

Money was understandably touted as the reason for the move to Meadow Lane. Why else would a recent England player drop down three divisions when still capable of playing at a higher level? Sol informed us that it was nothing to do with the five-year, £40,000 a week deal, but the challenge and ‘where I am at the moment in my life’.

Campbell has now abandoned another club, this time without running down his contract. Maybe he felt League Two football was below him; or maybe the club and facilities were not up to scratch. Perhaps he wants to play for England. My money is on the fact he is on the hunt for another signing-on fee.

Crouch Haters

Posted on 5:45 AM by Unknown
Walked in the office today, said hello to Patrick (Spurs Season Ticket Holder) and started discussing last nights game.

Paddy is a great lad, but it does annoy me how he (and others) can be so bleak. He's Spurs through and through, yet hates Crouch. Now, I can understand some Spurs fans not getting behind our players, but this guy dislikes Crouchie with such a passion.

"But Paddy, the guy got a Hat-trick last night!?"

"What do I care if he got three goals against a division one side?"

That was basically the gist of our conversation. Paddy's not the only guy I know who doesn't like Crouchie either. Up in the Shelf, there are droves of fans that clearly don't like the guy. The cumbersome lad that sits behind me with what must be his overweight son, can't say a good word about Peter Crouch.

What is it with these Crouch haters?

Chelsea vs. Spurs - Your Predictions

Posted on 6:46 AM by Unknown
Everyone I know has already written us off in this one. Chelsea are looking strong at the moment, really strong. As Harry said, they've got players in their squad that can bully us and as far as I'm concerned, I can see it coming down to how we marshal Drogba and Anelka.

If we let them out-power us, then it could be a rout. Harry stated that we've got to take the game to them. I completely agree with him. We don't want to show them too much respect and have to "park the buss in front of their goal".

Their movement under Ancelotti has been superb. The diamond formation he's got them playing means that their midfield rotate continually during the game. Palacios will have to be on his game, but not more so than his partner, be it Jenas or Huddlestone. Our midfield will need to work ever so hard, with movement being key.

The tried and failed experiment of playing Keane on the left must not be utilised again. We need to play with two up top and Crouch and Defoe look to be forming some sort of partnership. Can Keane be dropped? I think so. I'm not sure Harry would have brought him back if it meant that he couldn't be dropped.

Lennon against Cole will be the one to watch.

It's a difficult one to call, but I can see us losing this one unfortunately.

Chelsea 2-0 Spurs

Give it a go at the Bridge

Posted on 11:36 AM by Unknown
The Chelsea monkey is well and truly off our backs, so now is the perfect time to go to Stamford Bridge with confidence. The defeat against Manchester United has guaranteed complacency will not be a problem, but with four wins under our belts we should still head west with nothing to fear.

Stamford Bridge is no longer the fortress it once was – Liverpool and Arsenal both won there last season – and the players have the confidence of knowing they took four points from Chelsea last term.

The key is to stay on the attack. Three of Chelsea’s five league wins so far have come from losing positions. Hull City, Sunderland and Stoke City all took surprise leads against Carlo Ancelotti’s men and didn’t know what to do with it, reverting too deep into their game plan of containment.

Spurs have the quality and style of football to press for more goals if we do find ourselves in front and with goals no problem this season, it should not come as a major shock if we do start well again.

Things have been less sure at the back and any hopes of playing an expansive game at Chelsea rely on having a steady foundation that has been elusive so far. If reaching the top four in the Premier League is a realistic ambition, then clean sheets need to arrive. Sunday would be the best time to start.

Nonetheless, the team should not be too preoccupied with defence, as starting any game with the ambition of a point is a dangerous plan. The return to fitness of Jermaine Jenas is welcome, as he can do a screening job in front of the back four that Wilson Palacios has been so good at.

Peter Crouch will be utilised to occupy the opposing defence and the pace of Aaron Lennon could prove vital against Ashley Cole, who he likes coming up against. It will not be easy, but let’s give it a go at the Bridge, go against the Premiership betting odds and take the game to Chelsea.

We lost, get over it

Posted on 5:02 AM by Unknown
Okay, so we lost at home to the Premier League champions. From where I was sitting in the Shelf, it looked as though we held our own. Unfortunately for us, sloppy defending cost us in the long run as did losing Sgt. Wilson.

I suppose the only thing I could take from the game was the need for another hard midfielder sitting in alongside Palacios. Huddlestone did an okay job, but in games like this, we need an experienced head, someone who can take the game by the scruff of the neck, a Joe Jordan type character if you will.

Defoe took his goal brilliantly. For those that watched the game, I think you can understand why Harry sign Crouchie.

We're not near the quality of Manchester United yet, neither are we an equal match for Chelsea at the Bridge. If we are to see a distinct improvement this year, we'll need to come good against the sides around us, namely Manchester City, Everton and Villa. Performances against these side will prove our worth.

Spurs vs. Manchester United - Your Predictions

Posted on 5:36 AM by Unknown
The Premier League is back! I really can't stand international breaks. We were finally getting into some sort of rhythm, then we have to stop for two weeks so England can play two games.

Fair enough Azza did well and looks to have cemented his spot in Fabio's plans. A few guy's in the office still think Wright-Phillips is the better player. Specsavers, if you're listening, their names are Dan Kimlio and Freddy Tunridge.

Today we host Manchester United at the Lane, which means that their supporters won't need to travel far for this game.

I'll be there today and to be honest, I've got a feeling we'll nick this one. We've lost The Modfather and there's no doubt he'll be a massive loss. I know there's no point in asking, but I will anyway; Please don't expect Niko Kranjcar to replace Modric. They're not the same type of player, even though Niko may be expected to start in the same position as our legendry Croatian.

My prediction: Spurs 3-1 Manchester United
Defoe and Crouch with 2.

You know, we may not actually get to see a lot of Kranjcar today. Harry may spring one on us and play Keano on the left instead. Can't wait for this one!

Lampard & Gerrard PLC

Posted on 1:24 PM by Unknown
Who said that Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard can't play together? After watching tonight's International home tie against Croatia, it's plainly obvious that they can. Both players got two goals apiece as England ran riot against a Croatia team lacking our own stars, The Modfather and Charlie.

Lennon started the match and had an outstanding first half; getting fouled in the box which led to Lampard scoring from the spot for his first and then sending in a peach of a cross onto the head of Gerrard, which put England two up. To be fair, it looked as though the Croatian players didn't know who Azza was. They gave him enough room in the first half to set up shop and make a killing.

Defoe came on in the second half for Heskey, who in my opinion, needs to warm the bench of his sofa, let alone the subs bench. The Villa striker had two great opportunities to score and fluffed the both of them. Given Defoe's form, I could have seen him burying the both of them, but such is life. I don't want to sound too biased, so I must add that Defoe was quiet and quite ineffective. Let's hope he's saving himself for Saturday.

Kranjcar, the poor thing, was in a team that was so inept, that it reminded me of some of the Spurs sides Ramos put out during his final few weeks at the club. Eduardo was rightly booed in the first half, but that didn't stop the cheat from scoring Croatia's only goal. Cheating scum!

If all players were fit, Tottenham's showing for the night could have been 5 players and Croatia may not have conceded 5. This Croatia side is a far cry from the team that bossed England two years ago, or should I say that The Modfather bossed England in that match? He was captain fantastic that night.

I must add that Johnson had a fantastic game. It looks as though the defenders has started to defend. Well done lad.

-

Roman Pavlyuchenko also got a goal against Wales. Are we going to get a closer look at this lad any time soon?

Beck's could move to us

Posted on 12:59 AM by Unknown
David Beckham will move to a club in Europe during the January transfer window. Everyone said that he would be moving to Chelsea, but after their ruckus with FIFA, I can't see that on the cards.

Redknapp has gone on record and said how much he likes David Beckham. I'm sure he would love him at The Lane just for the status and excess baggage he brings with him. If Harry pulled this one off, where would David play?

Forget him on the right, or left for that matter. I don't think he's better that Huddlestone in the middle of the park either.

Beckham said himself that he's got to be playing competitive football; so much for the MLS then. I feel sorry for the guys that got him to go to the States. He turned up, earns approximately 500 times what some of his team mates take home a week and then has the cheek to say that he needs competitive football in order to cement his World Cup place. David, you made your bed, now sleep in it.

Even if the top bods in the Spurs boardroom think they can pull off a PR stunt like this, I would be amazed if he signed on the proviso that he had to start every game, no matter what.

If the unthinkable happens and he does end up at White Hart Lane, I'll be fairly disappointed. There are far better players in the world of football that could do a job for us.

Harry shouldn't be going for "has-been's".

Premier League Players going to the African Cup of Nations

Posted on 3:10 AM by Unknown

It looks like a few teams in the Premier League could suffer a fair bit when the African Cup of Nations 2010 kicks off on Sunday, January 10th 2010. The competition, which always coughs up some great entertainment, will see approximately 27 Premier League players set off for Angola.

Which clubs are going to suffer? I've listed the teams that will compete in the group stages with their respected Premier League players below.

Teams playing in the group stage

Group A:
Gabon (Hull's Daniel Cousin)
Togo (Aston Villa's Moustapha Salifou and Manchester City's Emmanuel Adebayor)
Morocco (Spurs'Adel Taarabt)
Cameroon (Burnley's André Bikey, Spurs' Benoît Assou-Ekotto and Sébastien Bassong, Arsenal's Alexandre Song)

Group B:
Tunisia
Mozambique
Nigeria (Bolton's Danny Shittu, Everton's Joseph Yobo and Victor Anichebe, Chelsea's John Obi Mikel, Fulham's Dickson Etuhu, Hull's Seyi Olofinjana, Pompey's Nwankwo Kanu and John Utaka)
Kenya

Group C:
Egypt
Zambia
Algeria (Pompey's Nadir Belhadj and Hull's Kamel Ghilas)
Rwanda

Group D:
Ghana (Wigan's Richard Kingson, Fulham's John Paintsil, Chelsea's Michael Essien)
Mali (Stoke's Mamady Sidibé)
Sudan
Benin

Group E:
Ivory Coast (Manchester City's Kolo Touré, Arsenal's Emmanuel Eboué, Chelsea's Salomon Kalou and Didier Drogba)
Burkina Faso
Guinea (Hull's Kamil Zayatte)
Malawi

So we'll be losing out on Bassong and Assou-Ekotto. Chelsea, on the other hand, will be losing Kalou, Drogba, Essien and Mikel. After yesterday's news, they'll be trying to bring in as many lawyers into the mix as possible in a bid to get the FIFA sanction lifted.

At least we've got Bale and Dawson to throw into the mix when BAE and the Bass go missing.

Chelsea get the book thrown at them

Posted on 6:36 AM by Unknown
It looks as though Chelsea have been banned from signing any new players up until 2011! FIFA have thrown the book at them as regards the Gael Kakuta affair.

Thing is, when FIFA try to impose the rulebook like they have on this occasion, I can see Chelsea appealing and winning. There's no justice in the game today. I may be jumping the gun, but I can see FIFA rescinding their proposed 2 season ban on signing players to a slap on the wrist, or at worst, a suspended sentence.

Either way, this has caused some great banter in the office. Any thoughts on this lads?

The odd one out

Posted on 10:53 AM by Unknown
Peace and quiet at last. The transfer window has been closed and we'll be without proper football until September 12th. It's like pre-season all over again.

All, at the moment, seems well at our great club. Harry's brought in Niko for a snip and we've not had a mass exodus of players.

I'm not sure how close Bentley was to moving up north, but I'm fairly pleased that he's stuck around. I suppose using London Transport appeals more to Mr. Brylcreem than having been seen on Manchester's tram's. He owes a lot to us, the club and especially himself. I just hope he gets his act together. He's a Spur and until he wears anything but Lilywhite, we should get behind the lad.

We've got a squad that can compete on all three fronts. Our defence could do with some TLC, but other than that, everythings peachy.

In the middle of the park, we've got The Hudd, Sgt. Wilson, Kranjcar, The Modfather, Azza, Dos Santos and JJ, all ready and willing.

I want to cast the spotlight on Jermaine Jenas for the time being. Can anyone see him getting a spot in our first eleven when he returns from injury?

Now, I'm not a Jenas hater. I think the lads got some class about him, but I'm not entirely convinced Harry sees him as a starter.

Those of you that have been to the games this season can clearly see what Harry's instructions to the duo in the middle are; "one stays, while the other pushes on". Tom and Wilson have been interchanging when possible and it's been working.

Can a fit Jenas take over from Huddlestone and do the same job? I have my doubts. Harry wants the core of our team to be solid and a foundation from which Modric and Lennon can do their stuff.

Then again, I also have my doubts about Huddlestone's consistency. I think he's taken his responsibilities on the chin,, but does Harry see him or Jenas as Palacios' long standing partner?

I only ask because is was clear to a lot of us fans and pundits that we were definitely after another Sgt. Wilson type midfielder. Sissoko, for instance, springs to mind. From what I saw of him, he fits into how Harry has got us playing. The Frenchman is as strong as they come and an athletic pro that doesn't take prisoners. The same goes for Sandro. I've not seen him play, but from what I've been told, he's a well-built commanding central midfielder that isn't scared to put a boot or two in. He can also play a bit, unlike our first Brazilian installment who was clearly impersonating a professional footballer, but just wasn't any good at it.

I don't think Harry's finished with his spending just yet. Come January, I've got a feeling JJ will be out the door. Who Harry brings in, is another question.

Martin Petrov fails medical?

Posted on 6:49 AM by Unknown
So I'm in the office, minding my own business, when a fellow Yid and colleague, Rob, comes up to my office and tells me that Martin Petrov is undergoing a medical.

"Great" I say.

About an hour later, Rob comes back and tells me that Petrov has failed his medical due to a problem with his knee. When I asked him for he source, he told me he heard the info from Steve, who I know to be an oracle regarding City.

If anyone other than Steve, in our media department, can vouch for this piece of news, please let us all know.

COYS!!!

PS. Has Niko Kranjčar signed yet? Everyone is 110% sure he has, so why don't the club make an announcement?

Harry: "We have agreed terms with Niko"

Posted on 1:41 AM by Unknown
It looks like it's official, well, sort of. I am a follower of Harry Redknapp on Twitter, as are another 270+. Now, I can't be sure that it's really Harry, but some of the things he has said in his tweets sort of confirm that it is him.

In a tweet sent this morning, Harry said the following;

"I'd like to let you know that we have agreed terms with Niko. He'll have his medical today at around 9."

There was no other word from him in relation to this, but it looks as though we have got our man. Plus there's all the other quotes that we've all read on Sky Sports.

I'm pretty pleased with the signing of Niko Kranjčar. He's actually not a bad player and will offer our squad more depth.

Any news on Bentley? It looks as though he'll be off to Manchester City and we'll also get our money back. That has to be the deal of the window in regards ripping them off, or have Everton won that medal with the money they got for Lescott?
