Raiding the relegated clubs

Posted on 6:10 AM by Unknown
Many of Tottenham’s supposed summer transfer targets ply their trade at Portsmouth. The Harry Redknapp link and implications of a new owner and full-time manager at Fratton Park make this logical, although we should perhaps be concentrating our efforts on raiding the relegated clubs.

The wisdom of this can obviously be questioned – surely the players in question can’t be that good if they're getting used to the idea of Championship football – but Spurs have a good recent history in this area.

Paul Robinson and Aaron Lennon were picked up from Leeds United at bargain prices following their relegation and financial implosion in 2004 and value for money is an important consideration, as Spurs have finally started to lose the tag of the Premier League’s most reckless spenders.

The comparison between Newcastle United and Leeds hardly needs pointing out, but it should be recognised that the Magpies are desperate to sell many of their players – relegated clubs are keen to remove high earners from their wage bill and Newcastle’s urgency is made greater by their supposed lack of planning for Premier League relegation.

However, do any Newcastle players stand out as potential transfer targets? Sebastian Bassong is their most prized asset and although the young defender is capable of playing for a top club, a centre back is not high on the list of Tottenham priorities.

If defensive cover is needed I would consider Middlesbrough, where David Wheater has been a rare reliable performer. His displays in 2007/08, when he was on the verge of earning international recognition, were more impressive, but he has the attributes to succeed at Spurs.

Indeed, Middlesbrough is the club to concentrate on, as they match Tottenham’s profile of developing and recruiting young English talent. Our desire to sign Stewart Downing is well-documented, although his long-term injury might postpone his move away from the Riverside. Adam Johnson and Nathan Porritt might be young players worth taking a closer look at.

West Bromwich Albion are short of the necessary quality that would strengthen our squad, although Chris Brunt – a Middlesbrough youth product - would provide depth in the left midfield area that remains a concern for the manager.

Which 3 players will sign?

Posted on 4:45 AM by Unknown
So then, the end of season rumpus is once again on us and it looks as though our manager has started the merry go round all on his own.

He's said that he'll need approximately £30 million to spend on the 3 players he's identified to really push on our squad. But he'll also have to sell around 4 players.

Let's begin with the players that will be leaving. We believe that Darren Bent & Tom Huddlestone will be sold to Villa in a deal that will bring Gareth Barry to Spurs. But of course, this relies on whether Barry want to move to us in the first instance.

David Bentley will also be moved on, but I can't see which side in the Premier League will take him on?

We can see Alan Hutton being the forth player moved on by Harry. Rangers are making all the right noises in an attempt to get him back and now that they've won the league, the transfer fee shouldn't be to much of a problem, although forget us making a profit on him, or even recouping what we shelled out for him.

When it comes to the players Harry wants in, expect him to bust a gut in getting Glen Johnson & Peter Crouch.

If Hutton & Bent do depart, the above two are exactly what Harry will want.

If the Barry deal doesn't come off, and to be honest, we can't see it happening, then expect us to go for Muntari.

Yes we've all read that he's not interested in leaving Inter, but we also remember reading in July 2008 that a certain Roman Pavlyuchenko wanted to sign for a Champions League side only and wasn't at all interested in Tottenham Hotspur.

To sum up, we believe that Glen Johnson, Peter Crouch & Sulley Muntari or Gareth Barry are the players Harry Redknapp has in mind.

With Modric playing well on the left, and with Gareth Bale as another left wing option, we can't see Harry trying to fill in that spot.

Spurs nearly did a Newcastle!

Posted on 3:27 AM by Unknown
Looking back at these recent events, I couldn't but help thinking that Newcastle United's plight may have happened to us.

At the end of the day, the buck stops with the big guy running the show. It's the Chairman, Chief Executive, Sugar Daddy, etc. who makes the calls, and our very own nearly did a Newcastle on us.

Even before a ball had been kicked in the 2007/2008 season, our Chairman was looking over the hill at pastures greener.

Martin Jol, the man that had brought us our highest ever Premier League finishes, was cast aside for the next best thing; Ramos.

Only a few years prior to this happening, Newcastle's board had decided that playing Champions League football under the stewardship of Sir Bobby Robson wasn't enough for them. No, they had to aim higher!

Talk about nonsensical thinking. Since Sir Bobby's departure, the club so very much loved by so many, has imploded.

I and many others feel that this is just the beginning of the end for Newcastle United, for if they fail to appoint an experienced manager they may be cast off into oblivion.

Thank God our Chairman saw sense and reason by bringing in an experienced manager in Harry Redknapp. For if Mr. Levy hadn't of made that call in October 2008 to Mr. Redknapp, this article may have read differently.

North East FC

Posted on 5:55 AM by Unknown
Tomorrow marks the eve of a troublesome Sunday, for one side in the North East, be it Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, or Hull, will be sucked into clutches of the Championship.

If this giant, and oh yes, Newcastle United FC is a giant, is dismissed from the Premier League, it will be catastrophic.

We have all been told that Newcastle won't be wearing the Leeds United shirt upon their exit, but just like the Damned United, Newcastle will be spinning crazily out of control.

When it comes to sellable assets, Newcastle also finish bottom of the league. With their majestic captain Owen, Viduka, and an abundance of other stars being out of contract within 60 days, the club loved by so many, may never return to the golden pebbled shores of the Premier League.

A rumour gathering pace in the North East is that another Spurs supporter, Sir Alan Michael Sugar, will take the reigns from his fellow Spurs compatriot, Ashley, if they are relegated. If this is to be the case, then I am sure Geordies will hail the Amstrad King as their new saviour, as his first task will be to steady the ship.

Looking back from his Tottenham days, I cannot see him flushing cash down the managers throat in a bid for instant success. Sir Alan has always taken projects by the scruff of the neck and slowly, but surely, turned them into precious gems.

What about Sunderland? I to can see them slipping into the abyss if relegated. For two seasons, they have splashed the cash on mediocre players; £7 million for McCartney, £8 million for Ferdinand and the list goes on and on.

Their reliance on the inexperienced time bomb, Roy Keane, has left them in the red, and with a dross of players, incapable of putting up a fight.

Niall Quinn may be the nicest bloke in football, but unfortunately nice doesn't win you games.

Just like Newcastle, I to fear for the long-term survival of Sunderland Athletic Football Club.

We now arrive at the doorsteps of both Middlesbrough and Hull. Both sides have young managers, and both sides are in trouble, but I foresee that their troubles are not as severe as Sunderland's or Newcastle's. Boro have players in which upon selling, will see them balance books.

Tuncay has been offered the captains role at former club, Fenerbahce, in a deal mooted to be in the region of £10 million.

Afonso Alves has an escape route at the ready with both PSV & Ajax ready to take the Brazilian off Boro's hands. Whether Middlesbrough can recoup the £12 million they forked out for him is another matter.

Downing, even with a broken foot and an expected lay off for the next 3 months, will command a transfer fee in the region of £8 to £10 million.

With the aforementioned players leaving Teesside, Boro have ready replacements in place. Their academy has an abundance of talent waiting in the wings. Players like Adam johnson is a ready-made replacement for Downing, whilst other young talents await their chance to shine.

Let's not forget Mr. Gibson, a chairman that has seen the good, bad and even worse times while at the helm of his beloved Boro. His unparalleled trust in Gareth Southgate will see the side return to the Premier League if they are to go down.

What of Hull? Only a fair few people realise that they to are just within the borders of having the "North East" tag thrust upon them.

If they can keep a hold of players like Turner and Myhill, I too can see a safe passage back to the worlds finest league.

Unfortunately, out of the four clubs mentioned, I can see Newcastle slipping up with just a point at Villa.

Sir Alex has already reiterated that he will play his reserves against Hull, amid the wrath of Shearer & co.

The North East, so lovingly adorned in the past, is now as welcome as a mine field.

Can you see us sinking Liverpool?

Posted on 3:44 AM by Unknown
I have a feeling that we will beat Liverpool on Sunday. After they threw away the title by drawing too many games, I can see Gerrard & co playing like it's a nothing game.

My prediction: Liverpool 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur

End of season woes as Spurs win again

Posted on 8:37 AM by Unknown
As I watched today's game against City from a pub in sunny Cyprus, I was pretty sure that our players were on holiday to.

Defoe opened the scoring with a cheeky back-heeled half-volley, but other than that, we were entirely flat. Tottenham's timing was all over the place. Mislaid passes, no concentration, and whoever is impersonating Robbie Keane should be shot; for Keane was on the pitch, but I assure you, only in body. His spirit is laying on a beach somewhere not too far from me, although his Romario/Bebeto goal-scoring celebration brought some laughs out of two gooner scum sitting in the corner.

We did have some excitement put our way when Defoe thrashed out at the linesman; knocking him to the ground. Whether Jermain thought the linesman was a City player is anyone's guess?

City came out with all their guns blazing in the second half, only for ex-England international turned Mohichan, Richards, to tumble over Manchester United loanee, Campbell in the box, which in turn led to the Keane impersonator scoring from the spot.

Final score: Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Manchester City.

A few Geordies where in the other corner, swearing and hitting their heads against the oak-finished wall. "Newcastle will go down", they bellowed. You heart has to go out to them, or not.

No signings

Posted on 4:49 AM by Unknown
I have read through a fair few user comments relating to the type of players we need to buy this summer in a bid strengthen our squad.

To be completely honest, I feel that we don't need to spend any money on superstar players.

The last few games have shown that we have a solid and most importantly, settled side. Why go out and buy high profile players?

Our squad could do with some new recruitments, but as a first eleven, we are covered.

If the season had started in April, we would be 2nd in the league.

I believe that given another few months, our current side will get better and stronger.

Harry and his staff have got the team playing.

Adding a charade of talent, could unsettle the side, but saying that, it's still great fun seeing the likes of Muntari, Glenn Johnson, Bastos, etc. signing up.

Let's hope Harry sticks to his guns and only buys 1 or 2 players. If it were me, the 1 or 2 players I'd go for would be players that could compliment the squad. The type of players that wouldn't expect to start every game.

A season without European football could be a blessing in disguise.

There are those that feel we have to make the Europa League in an attempt to attract the best players. This simply isn't the case. Harry himself stated this last week. If playing in the best league, within London and for Tottenham Hotspur isn't enough, then they're not right for the club.

Good at Goodison. And bad

Posted on 10:01 AM by Unknown
Harry Redknapp talked of the lessons he learned at Goodison Park during the recent Premier League clash. He might have been referring to the 3-5-2 system he employed or Gareth Bale’s welcome return to form, but I hope it was actually the team’s disappointing mindset that provided food for thought.

This seems a little harsh – a goalless draw at fifth place-chasing Everton is creditable, as was our second away clean sheet of the season – but after a good start there seemed to be no appetite to win the game.

This is so often the case. We generally start away fixtures well, controlling possession and subduing the home crowd. A negative mindset then seems to take over, with the players perhaps assuming an away point is always a good result.

Tottenham’s excellent home form can explain this, but Harry needs to instil a belief in the players that they can win games on the road by taking the game to the opposition, as we do so well at home.

Our home and away results need to match more closely next season.

Some credit for Spurs’ diminishing attacking intent on Saturday must go to Everton. David Moyes quickly adjusted to Spurs’ unexpected use of wing backs, by asking his own full backs to push forward and deny Bale and Alan Hutton space in the Toffees’ half.

However, Everton were still there for the taking. Shorn of the services of their best attacker and defender (Mikel Arteta and Phil Jagielka), they had an inexperienced central midfield that was exposed in their last home game by notoriously poor travellers Manchester City. We have an excellent recent record at Goodison Park and should have played with more confidence than we ended the game with.

An innate defensiveness crept in, with the midfield playing so deep that any sustained pressure on Tim Howard’s goal was impossible.

True, a better timed pass here and there by Luka Modric could have secured a counter-attacking smash-and-grab 1-0 win, but the reality was their keeper had no real saves to make.

The manager needs to cure this damaging lack of ambition on our travels next season. Spurs have got their home form back in order, we just need to take that on the road with us.

"He will sign for Tottenham", says agent

Posted on 3:14 AM by Unknown
French sports newspaper, L'equipe, have stated that Sunderland's loanee, Djibril Cisse, has already agreed a deal to move to Tottenham Hotspur in the close season.

"Djibril will not remain at Sunderland after the season has finished. We have an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur for Djibril to sign a 12 month contract. He will sign for Tottenham", stated Ranko Stojic, the French strikers agent.

I really hope that this story is rubbish and an attempt to get him moved onto another club.

Harry spoke about bringing in one or two great players. Djibril Cisse isn't a great player. His stints at Liverpool & Sunderland have proved that.

Stop this "Top Four" nonsense

Posted on 3:26 AM by Unknown
It seems as though a Spurs player makes a claim every season that we may be good enough to challenge for a Champions League placing.

In the run up to the 2007/2008 season, Ledley King made that assumption. 3 months later, Jol got sacked.

King's defensive partner, Jonathan Woodgate, made a similar assumption yesterday.

I really do wish that our players would stop dreaming of what could be, and focus on the task ahead; namely, Everton away, City at home, and Liverpool away.

We are no way near good enough to make the Champions League, even if Harry does bring in his "one or two" players.

I also hope that we don't make the Europa League. The 2009/2010 campaign should be a season in which our players bed into a level of consistency.

Anything else we achieve next season should be viewed as a bonus.

Ryan Mason

Posted on 3:42 AM by Unknown
A product of the Tottenham Hotspur Academy, Ryan Mason, 18, has scored an impressive 39 goals in 47 games (4 games starting on the bench) for the academy.

Mason started off in midfield, but was ushered into an attacking midfielder/striker role by Clive Allen after he scored 11 goals in his first full season.

Ryan Mason is extremely pacey and has an abundance of skill.

We expect him to make several first-team appearances in the coming season, especially in the early League Cup rounds.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar

Posted on 5:25 AM by Unknown
Roman Pavlyuchenko is making all the right noises in an attempt to secure a move away from Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

To openly come out and boast that a move to Real Madrid was on the cards in January doesn't sound as though his hearts with us any longer.

If Real are still interested, why don't they put their money where their mouth is and sign him, or better yet, accept a swap deal that takes Pavlyuchenko to Real Madrid and brings in their want away Dutch international striker, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

He's apparently ready to throw in the towel at Real and wants a move after being dropped on several occasions by Ramos. It's common knowledge that Harry Redknapp had made several enquiries about Huntelaar in the last transfer window, which shows that our boss is interested in the lad.

If Harry's after players "in their prime", you couldn't get a better goal-scorer than Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

Players In/Out

Posted on 6:16 AM by Unknown
It's that time again when every player is linked with Tottenham Hotspur, either in a bid to get an improved contract with their current club, or just for some publicity.

Rarely are linked players actually signed by us, but we do feel that with Harry Redknapp at the helm, things could be different as we finally have a manager that uses his media connections to his advantage.

Ins
We believe that Inter's Sully Muntari is a dead cert. He'll settle comfortably with Palacios in the middle of the park.

Lille's left sided midfielder, Michel Bastos, could also be brought in by Harry. Bear in mind though, he's not a left winger, but rather a better version of Downing. If he does sign, he'll need some time to settle.

And finally, I do have a feeling Harry's spoken to the Austrian International 6.5 foot tall striker, Marc Janko. Given what the lads said in the media, it's as if he's already training at Spurs Lodge.

Outs
If Munty is to sign, I can't see Jenas staying. As the Mirror reported, we also predict a swap deal happening.

Darren Bent will be off to. Harry would actually like him to stay, but Bent wants week-to-week action.

The enigma that is David Bentley will probably be off. If reports stating that Athletico Madrid are after him, we feel he could be on his way. After all, we can't see him replacing Lennon on the wing.

Taarabt will be off, as well as Boateng. With regards to Bale, we hope he remains at the club and proves all his doubters wrong, but unfortunately, we feel that if a substantial bid comes in for him, he'll be off.

Zokora and Wigan seem to be making all the right noises at the moment, so don't be too surprised if you see Zoko diving for the Latics next season.

Huddlestone is also another player that could be on his way if a big enough bid comes in.

Players that we can't see coming are Porto's contract-wanting left back, Cissokho, Arsenal bound Santa Cruz, Stewart Downing (unless the Bastos deal falls through), and about another 132 linked players.

We'd be delighted if Harry could bring in just Munty, Bastos and a 4th striker to replace Bent.

What are your predictions?
